A custom flower arrangement is designed for one spot in one home, not pulled off a shelf. I create mine from high-quality faux flowers, succulents, and greenery, choosing the scale, colors, and shape for the room it will live in, and I can build it into a container you already own. The result looks like it belongs, because it was made for that table, console, or kitchen island.

I am Joseph Matthews, founder of J Matthews Design Studio in Lakewood Ranch. After 20 years as an interior designer, and now designing homes across Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, and the Lakewood Ranch area, I have seen how often the finishing touches get left to chance.  Floral design is one of the ways I close that gap, and I create custom arrangements at Epic Home Decor, Diane Creasy's home decor store on Boardwalk Loop.

What makes a flower arrangement custom?

A custom arrangement starts with the room instead of the product. Before choosing a single stem, I look at four things:

  • Scale. A great room with high ceilings needs a larger, more sculptural piece than a powder room vanity. Store-bought arrangements are often too small for the space they end up in.

  • Palette. The colors should pick up something already in the room, whether that is the upholstery, the artwork, or the view outside.

  • Container. The vessel sets the tone. Hammered silver reads glamorous, a turned wood bowl reads organic and coastal, and a white ceramic boat reads clean and modern.

  • Setting. How the piece will be seen matters. A dining centerpiece is viewed from every side and should stay low enough to talk over; an entry console piece is viewed mostly from the front and can go taller.

Why choose faux flowers over fresh?

Faux arrangements give you the look of a designed floral piece every day of the year without the upkeep. They do not need water, they do not wilt, and they are not affected by allergies or pollen. Good faux stems today have realistic texture and color variation, so a well-built arrangement reads as natural from across the room. For seasonal homes and busy households, that consistency is the main appeal: the piece looks the same the day you come back as the day you left.

Can you design an arrangement around my own container?

Yes, and it is one of my favorite ways to work. A family bowl, a vase you have never known what to do with, or a tray that fits your dining table perfectly can become the foundation of the arrangement. Set an appointment, and I’ll design around its size, depth, and finish so the flowers and the vessel look like they were made for each other.

What kinds of arrangements can you create?

Every piece is different, but these recent arrangements show the range.

Tall purple and yellow checkered blooms rise out of a bed of moss in a textured silver container.
It’s a bold, sculptural piece with a touch of glamour, suited to an entry, a console, or anywhere that needs height.

Where does a custom arrangement work best?

Almost anywhere a room needs a finishing point. The places I design for most often are:

  • Dining table centerpieces, kept low enough to see over.

  • Entry consoles and foyer tables, where a taller piece makes a first impression.

  • Kitchen islands and sideboards, where a long, horizontal shape fits best.

  • Coffee tables, where a wide, low bowl can be enjoyed from the sofa.

  • Covered lanais and outdoor dining tables.

  • Offices and reception desks that need something welcoming.

Is a custom arrangement a good gift?

Yes. A custom arrangement makes a thoughtful housewarming, hostess, or holiday gift because it is made once, for that person, and lasts. If you know the recipient's style or have a container that suits their home, I can design around it.

White protea and succulents in a pale blue bowl
Large white protea-style blooms pair with a sculptural green succulent, soft chartreuse accents, and a pearlescent shell in a pale blue, wave-edged bowl. The palette is quiet and fresh, which makes it easy to place in a dining room or kitchen.

Succulents and spiky greens in a white boat-shaped vessel
A long white ceramic vessel holds a mix of rosette succulents, aloe-style leaves, and tall dark spires. The horizontal shape makes it a natural fit for a kitchen island, a sideboard, or a long dining table.

Frequently asked questions

Are your custom arrangements real or faux flowers?

They are faux. I design with high-quality artificial florals, succulents, and greenery, so the arrangement keeps its shape and color without water or replacement.

Can I bring my own container?

Yes. Bring in a bowl, vase, tray, or planter you already love, and I will design the arrangement around its size, shape, and finish.

Can you match an arrangement to my decor?

Yes. Matching the room is the point of a custom piece. A photo of the space and its colors helps me choose the stems, palette, and scale.

Where can I order a custom flower arrangement in Lakewood Ranch?

At Epic Home Decor, 10671 Boardwalk Loop in Lakewood Ranch, FL. You can call the store at (941) 210-4713 or reach me through the J Matthews Design Studio contact page.

How do I care for a faux flower arrangement?

Dust it gently every so often with a soft brush or a cool setting on a hair dryer, and keep it out of strong direct sun, which can fade faux stems over time.
